Donate to LunaYou: Maternal Health Really Matters

Women in the U.S. are more likely to die in childbirth than any other high-income nation in the world. This can’t be. Now dig a little deeper, Black and Latina women in America are two to three times more likely to die in childbirth than the general population. How do we allow that to happen in our country? We have no choice but to act. At BIF we believe in solving the hardest societal problems first and the more we learned about our poor U.S. maternal health outcomes and the devastating impact on so many women we knew we had the focus for our first self-initiated design effort. LunaYou is the right solution at the right time but we need the support of our BIF community to make it happen.

We know what causes the problem. The research is clear on why U.S. maternal health outcomes lag globally despite spending more on healthcare than any other high-income nation. Our medical care system isn’t built for wellbeing. It’s built for recognizing and treating disease and managing medical problems. Pregnancy isn’t a disease. Our medical system places institutions and medical expertise at the center, not individuals. It gives little consideration to social determinants and lived experience. Research clearly shows the negative consequences of gender and racial bias in our healthcare system which is producing distrust and poor outcomes particularly for Black and Latina women.

We know how to solve the problem. Poor maternal health outcomes are preventable but it requires enabling women to be more in charge of their own pregnancies. LunaYou puts women at the center personalizing a wellbeing experience equipping her with the trusted information, support and tools she needs to lead a healthy pregnancy. Every woman will have access to a wellbeing coach, an app to monitor her own risk factors and a personal circle of support. LunaYou empowers women in their pregnancy journey to recognize and take earlier action, seamlessly accessing medical care and social services as needed with confidence. LunaYou creates the conditions for more equitable and culturally responsive care and support which research shows will improve maternal health outcomes.

We need your help to prototype LunaYou and to scale our solution nationally. We have transformed BIF to self-initiate projects like LunaYou. Our pivot from work-for-hire to self-initiated projects at BIF is both scary and exhilarating. We feel like entrepreneurs again!  Together we can reimagine maternal health and help solve an important social problem impacting an increasing number of women in our country. Please consider supporting LunaYou because maternal health really matters.
